Expanding  batteries  means only one thing that is happening buildup of gas inside. The gases are produced due to electro-chemical oxidation of the electrolyte. This happens by the combination of hydrogen gas and breakdown products of some of the other components in the battery Such type of oxidation occurs usually due to overcharging of the battery or due to a faulty battery, battery charger or faulty charging electronics in the phone hardware.

Stop using such a battery immediately and dispose it off in correct way. Best buy offers battery disposal services. Don’t even try to use smartphone with such type of battery defect, remember your life is more important

Keep it in mind that LI-ION batteries are dangerous & a large buildup of gas in will cause them to burst and possibly catch fire, spreading toxic fumes and can even damage your smartphone completely. As a bulge is one of the signs of a failing battery.

The latest smartphones that are being available today comes with over charge protection, that does help to some extent but not really helpful, when you have kept your phone on charge for a longer time. On an average it takes around less than 3 hours to charge the battery.

What happens  when  your smartphone battery is fully charged and it is still connected to the charger?

The charging stops and smartphone will consume power from the battery, but as soon as the charge drops to say around 99% or 98% the charging process will begin again and when it reaches 100% it again stop. This process goes on and on & this will not damage the battery but in the longer run will age/old  the battery faster, you might suddenly experience the faster drain & phone switching off suddenly, sudden big battery % drop and ultimately a dead battery. The first option is to avoid charging at night for a long period when you know that the handset will get charged much faster and you will not be able to monitor it properly.
